Classic Rice Krispies Treats with marshmallow

Rice Krispies Treats were created in 1939 by two Kellogg’s employees, Mildred Day and Malitta Jensen, as a fundraising treat for a Camp Fire Girls troop in Michigan. The recipe was printed on Rice Krispies cereal boxes soon after, and the simple three-ingredient treat has remained a beloved American classic for generations.

Sweet, gooey, and ready in minutes

Melted marshmallows and butter are stirred into crisp rice cereal for a chewy, no-bake treat that comes together in minutes.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat.
  2. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the salt and rice cereal until evenly coated.
  4. Press the mixture into a greased baking pan while still warm.
  5. Let cool for at least 20 minutes.
  6. Cut into squares and serve.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Press the mixture gently with a buttered spatula or wax paper — pressing too firmly makes the treats dense and hard. Fresh marshmallows melt more smoothly than older, drier ones.
