Kotopoulo Lemonato — Greek lemon chicken with potatoes, oregano and garlic

Kotopoulo lemonato is Greek lemon chicken at its homiest: a whole bird or chicken pieces roasted with potatoes in a lemony, garlicky, oregano-scented pan until the skin turns bronze and the potatoes drink up every drop of sauce.

This is the Sunday chicken of Greek households, simple enough for a weeknight and special enough for company. Serve with the lemony potatoes, a green salad, and bread for the pan juices.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add the chicken and potatoes, tossing to coat well. Marinate 30 minutes at room temperature.
  4. Arrange the chicken and potatoes in a single layer in a large roasting pan; pour the remaining marinade and the broth around, not over, the chicken.
  5. Roast 50-60 minutes, basting twice, until the chicken is golden and cooked through (165°F) and the potatoes are tender.
  6. Add the lemon slices for the last 10 minutes. Rest 10 minutes, then serve with the pan juices spooned over.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Baste every 20 minutes for burnished skin and juicy meat. If the potatoes need more time, remove the chicken and return them to the oven alone.
