Cheese Grits

Cheese grits are the creamy, savory side of the Southern table — stone-ground grits cooked slowly and finished with plenty of sharp cheddar and butter. They’re the bed for shrimp and grillades, and the breakfast side that turns any plate into comfort food.

Chef Emily presents Cheese Grits

The creamy Southern side

Slow-cooked stone-ground grits finished with sharp cheddar and butter — creamy cheese grits, the Southern classic.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Bring the water and salt to a boil in a heavy pot.
  2. Slowly whisk in the grits and reduce to a simmer. Cook 20-25 minutes, whisking often, until thick and creamy.
  3. Stir in the milk and butter and cook 5 minutes more.
  4. Off the heat, stir in the cheddar, pepper, and garlic powder until melted and smooth.
  5. Serve hot.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Cook the grits low and slow, whisking often, so they get silky. Add the cheese off the heat so it melts without separating.
