Grappamiel

Grappamiel is the classic Uruguayan winter warmer: grappa or caña warmed gently with honey until the whole kitchen smells like a honeycomb. It is the drink served after rainy-day outings and at country gatherings, sipped slowly from small glasses to chase the cold away.

Winter’s warmest little glass

The honey melts into the grappa into a golden, syrupy drink that warms the chest going down, with the sharp spirit rounded into soft sweetness. A curl of orange zest and a cinnamon stick turn it into something almost like a holiday toddy.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Combine the grappa, honey, orange zest, and cinnamon sticks in a small saucepan.
  2. Warm over the lowest heat, stirring gently, until the honey dissolves and the mixture is steaming, 4 to 5 minutes — do not let it boil.
  3. Taste and add more honey if you prefer it sweeter.
  4. Ladle into small glasses with a piece of orange zest in each and serve very hot.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Never boil grappamiel or the alcohol evaporates and the honey turns bitter. Leftover mixture keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for 2 weeks; reheat gently.
