Cuban Sandwich

A Cuban classic — the Cuban Sandwich stacks roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard inside crusty Cuban bread, then presses everything until the cheese melts and the crust crackles. Born in the cigar factories and cafés of Tampa and Key West, it carries the soul of Cuban exile. Cut on the diagonal and eaten out of hand, it is lunch at its most perfect.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Split the bread lengthwise without cutting all the way through, and open it like a book.
  2. Spread the mustard generously over both cut sides.
  3. Layer the Swiss cheese on the bottom half, then the roast pork, then the ham, and finally the pickle chips; close the sandwich.
  4. Butter the outside of both halves of the bread.
  5. Heat a large skillet, griddle or sandwich press over medium heat; if using a skillet, set a heavy pan or foil-wrapped brick on top of the sandwich to press it down.
  6. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing firmly, until the bread is golden and crackly and the cheese has melted.
  7. Slice the sandwich diagonally and serve immediately.

💡 Chef tips & storage

The press is essential — a heavy cast-iron skillet works when you don't have a plancha. Use real Swiss cheese and spread it edge to edge so every bite is cheesy.
