Blueberry grunt gets its name from the sound it makes — the soft grunting of berries bubbling away in the pot as the dumplings steam on top. It was a summer dessert in the outports, made when the barrens were full of wild blueberries and the pickers came home with stained hands and full buckets. Simpler than a pie and quicker than a duff, it was the treat that could be on the table while the kettle was still boiling.

What makes it great is the way the berries break down into a thick, jammy purple sauce while the fluffy dumplings on top soak up the juice at their edges. Serve it warm from the pot with a splash of cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and the combination of tart berries and soft, tender dumplings is pure comfort. It’s rustic, it’s forgiving, and it tastes like a Newfoundland summer in a bowl.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Combine the blueberries, sugar and water in a large, deep pot and bring to a gentle boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Simmer the berries for 10 minutes until they release their juice and the sauce turns deep purple.
  3. For the dumplings, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together in a bowl.
  4. Cut the cold butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs, then stir in the milk to make a soft dough.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the dough over the simmering berry mixture — they can touch, but try not to pile them up.
  6. Cover the pot tightly and simmer gently for 12 to 15 minutes without lifting the lid, until the dumplings are puffed and cooked through.
  7. Spoon the grunt into bowls, making sure each one gets dumpling, berries and plenty of sauce, and serve warm with cream.

💡 Chef tips & storage

The lid stays on — peeking lets out the steam the dumplings need to cook. Use a pot deep enough that the berry sauce won't boil up over the dumplings, and serve it warm.
