A sizzling plate of eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, grilled tomato, mushrooms, and baked beans — the breakfast that keeps Britain going. It’s a glorious, savory overload that demands to be eaten with toast and a strong cup of tea.

Also known as a fry-up, the full English is served in cafes from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, with regional variations in every county. It’s a weekend ritual and a cure for almost any ailment, especially hangovers.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Heat the oven to 300°F to keep things warm. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and fry the sausages until browned and cooked through, 12-15 minutes; keep warm.
  2. Fry the bacon until crisp, 3-4 minutes per side; keep warm. Fry the black pudding until crisp-edged, about 3 minutes per side.
  3. In the same pan, cook the tomatoes and mushrooms, cut side down, until softened and caramelized, 6-8 minutes; season.
  4. Warm the baked beans in a small saucepan over low heat.
  5. Melt the butter in a nonstick pan and fry the eggs to your liking.
  6. Pile everything onto warm plates with the toast, and serve at once.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Cook in batches and keep things warm in a low oven so everything arrives at the table hot at the same moment. Offer brown sauce, ketchup, and plenty of tea.
