The Afghan is a genuinely New Zealand creation, first appearing in cookbooks in the 1930s. Its name is believed to honour the Afghans of the wars of that era, and every Kiwi baker has their own take on the classic recipe — all agreeing it must include cornflakes for that signature crunch.
Afghans are everything a treat should be: deeply chocolatey, buttery, with a surprising snap of cornflake and a thick crown of chocolate icing. They’re a mainstay of Kiwi bakeries and bake sales, and they disappear faster than any other biscuit on the plate.
