Sorghum Molasses Biscuits

Warm, flaky biscuits drizzled with rich sorghum molasses, a classic Appalachian morning treat.

The golden syrup of the hills

Flaky hot biscuits and a pour of sorghum — the dark, mineral-sweet syrup that mountain mills pressed from cane.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in the cold butter until pea-sized crumbs form.
  3. Stir in the cold buttermilk until a shaggy dough forms; knead 4-5 times on a floured surface.
  4. Pat to 1-inch thickness and cut into rounds with a biscuit cutter.
  5. Place touching in a greased pan, brush with melted butter, and bake 12-15 minutes until golden.
  6. Split while warm and drizzle generously with sorghum syrup.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Real sorghum syrup is darker and earthier than molasses — seek it out. Biscuits are best warm, straight from the oven.
