A traditional Jamaican dish — Gungo Peas Soup is the hearty pigeon pea soup Jamaicans make for Saturday lunch, thick with yam, green banana and spinners. Gungo peas have a nutty, earthy flavor that sets them apart from kidney beans, and the coconut milk broth is gently scented with thyme and scotch bonnet. It is especially loved around Christmas, when the peas are in season.

💡 Chef tips & storage
Gungo peas take longer than you expect — start them early or use canned to cut the time in half. The soup should be creamy and thick, closer to a stew than a thin broth.
