Octopus in Coconut Cream (Feke Mo Lolo)

Octopus, or feke, has been gathered from Tongan reefs for centuries. On moonlit nights families wade out with spears and lanterns, and the day’s catch is simmered in coconut cream with onion until the meat turns meltingly tender. In coastal villages, feke mo lolo is a treasured dish passed down through generations, each cook with an opinion about exactly how long to simmer.

What makes it great: sweet, briny octopus in a silky coconut sauce, brightened with lime and warmed with a hint of curry. The sauce is the star — thick, glossy, and made for spooning over boiled taro or rice. It tastes like the ocean and the coconut grove met in one pot.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. If the octopus is large, cut it into 2-inch pieces; small octopus can be left whole.
  2. Place the octopus in a pot with the water and simmer gently for 45-60 minutes, until tender; drain.
  3. Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion and garlic until soft, about 4 minutes.
  4. Add the cooked octopus, coconut cream, salt, and curry powder if using, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Stir in the lime juice, taste and adjust the salt, and serve hot with boiled taro, yam, or rice.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Octopus can be tough — the long gentle simmer is what makes it tender, so do not rush it. Add the lime juice at the end, not during cooking, so it brightens the rich coconut sauce.
