Mild young cod baked with butter, lemon, and breadcrumbs until flaky and lightly golden.

The Boston shore classic

Scrod is the New England name for young cod or haddock, and this simple butter-and-crumb bake lets the sweet, delicate fish shine.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and lightly butter a baking dish.
  2. Pat the cod dry and season both sides with salt and pepper. Arrange in the dish.
  3. Mix the melted butter, lemon juice, and lemon zest; brush half over the fish.
  4. Combine the breadcrumbs, parsley, and garlic powder, then press the mixture over the fillets. Drizzle with the remaining butter.
  5. Bake 18-20 minutes, until the crumbs are golden and the fish flakes easily. Serve with lemon wedges.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Buy thick, center-cut fillets so the fish stays moist while the topping browns. Let the scrod rest 2 minutes before serving.
