A traditional Honduran dish — casamiento, the ‘marriage’ of rice and beans, is the daily companion to nearly every Honduran plate: leftover red beans and rice fried together with onion, bell pepper, and garlic until the grains turn savory and the bottom crisps. Simple, thrifty, and deeply comforting, it is the backbone of the Honduran table.
Casamiento
A traditional Honduran dish — casamiento, the ‘marriage’ of rice and beans, is the daily companion to nearly every Honduran plate: leftover red beans and rice fried together with onion, bell pepper, and garlic until the grains turn savory and the bottom crisps.

Step by stepInstructions
- Heat the butter in a large skillet and cook the onion, bell pepper, and garlic until soft, about five minutes
- Add the chorizo, if using, and cook until browned
- Add the beans with their broth, mashing them lightly with the back of a spoon
- Stir in the rice and fold everything together until the rice is coated and streaked with beans
- Season with salt and cook over medium heat without stirring too much, letting the bottom form a slightly crispy crust
- Stir in the culantro, and serve hot with crema and crumbled cheese, alongside eggs, plantains, or grilled meat
💡 Chef tips & storage
Day-old rice works best — it holds its shape and soaks up the bean juices without turning to mush. Some Hondurans add a splash of coconut milk on the coast, a delicious variation.
