Legend has it the chivito was born in Punta del Este in the 1940s, when a hungry customer asked for a chivito (young goat) sandwich and the cook improvised with a grilled beef steak instead. The happy accident became the country’s most beloved sandwich, served in bars and homes from Montevideo to the beach.
The accidental sandwich that became a national icon
Every bite stacks juicy grilled steak against salty ham, crisp bacon, and molten mozzarella, with a fried egg adding a silky, runny richness that ties it all together. Fresh lettuce and tomato keep the whole towering mess bright and balanced — messy, indulgent, and impossible to eat without napkins.
