Classic Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon rolls have Northern European roots, particularly Swedish ‘kanelbulle,’ brought to the United States by immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The sticky, glazed American version became a beloved bakery and holiday morning treat throughout the 20th century, especially popularized by mall bakeries in the 1980s.

Soft, gooey, and topped with sweet glaze

A soft yeasted dough is rolled with cinnamon-sugar filling, baked until golden, and topped with a sweet cream cheese glaze.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Combine warm milk and yeast, let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix in sugar, melted butter, eggs, salt, and flour to form a soft dough. Knead 8 minutes.
  3. Let rise 1 hour until doubled.
  4. Roll the dough into a rectangle, spread with softened butter, and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Roll up tightly, slice into 12 rolls, and place in a greased pan. Let rise 30 minutes and bake at 180°C for 22-25 minutes.
  6. Beat cream cheese with powdered sugar and a splash of milk, then drizzle over the warm rolls.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Use a piece of dental floss to slice the rolls cleanly without squashing them. Rolls can be assembled the night before and refrigerated, then baked fresh in the morning.
