Dr Pepper glazed ham — baked ham brushed with a sweet spiced Dr Pepper and brown sugar glaze

Dr Pepper glazed ham is the quirky, beloved Texas twist on the classic holiday ham — a fully baked ham brushed with a sweet, spiced glaze made from reduced Dr Pepper, brown sugar, and a touch of mustard. The soda adds a caramel sweetness no other glaze can match.

Chef Emily presents Dr Pepper Glazed Ham

The Texas holiday ham

A baked ham glazed with a sweet-spiced Dr Pepper reduction — the quirky Texas classic.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Heat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Score the ham in a diamond pattern.
  2. Simmer the Dr Pepper in a saucepan until reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Whisk in the brown sugar, honey, mustard, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper until smooth.
  3. Place the ham in a roasting pan and brush with a third of the glaze. Cover loosely with foil.
  4. Roast for 1 hour, basting with glaze every 20 minutes, then remove the foil and roast 30-45 minutes more, basting, until glossy and caramelized.
  5. Rest 20 minutes before carving.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Reduce the Dr Pepper until it's syrupy — that's the secret to a glaze that actually sticks. Baste every 20 minutes and tent the ham with foil if the glaze starts to burn.
