Rich salmon chowder ladled into a hollowed sourdough loaf for a hearty, rustic meal.

Bread bowl, by the bay

Flaky salmon, potatoes, and cream ladled into a crusty sourdough bowl — the ultimate PNW comfort dinner.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Melt the butter in a pot and cook the onion and celery until soft, about 6 minutes.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook 2 minutes; gradually whisk in the broth.
  3. Add the potatoes and simmer until tender, about 12 minutes.
  4. Stir in the milk and cream and simmer 5 minutes.
  5. Add the salmon and cook gently 5-6 minutes until it flakes. Season with salt, pepper, and dill.
  6. Cut the top off the sourdough loaf, hollow out the center, and ladle the chowder inside. Top with chives and serve with the bread lid.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Keep the salmon pieces generous. Toast the hollowed bread bowl briefly in the oven to keep it from getting soggy.
