Southern Sweet Tea

Sweet tea is the official drink of the South — black tea brewed strong, sweetened while hot, and served ice-cold over a glass full of ice. It’s the beverage of porches, picnics, and every meal in between.

Chef Emily presents Southern Sweet Tea

The official drink of the South

Strong black tea sweetened while hot and poured over ice — Southern sweet tea, cold and perfect.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, add the tea bags, and steep 10 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bags and stir in the sugar (and baking soda, if using) until completely dissolved.
  3. Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water.
  4. Chill thoroughly.
  5. Serve over glasses full of ice, with lemon or mint if you like.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Sweeten the tea while it's hot so the sugar dissolves completely. Brew it strong — the ice will dilute it. Add lemon or fresh mint for a twist.
