The world-famous Swedish meatball: a juicy blend of beef and pork, gently spiced with allspice, browned in butter and finished in a velvety cream gravy. Small, tender and bathed in sauce, they are comfort food at its most iconic.

Serve them with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and pickled cucumber, the way they are eaten across Sweden. The cream gravy is the soul of the dish — rich enough to coat every meatball and every spoonful of potatoes.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Soak the panko in the milk for 10 minutes.
  2. Mix in the beef, pork, grated onion, egg, salt, pepper and allspice until just combined.
  3. Roll into 1-inch meatballs, keeping your hands lightly damp.
  4. Brown the meatballs in butter in batches over medium-high heat; set aside.
  5. Whisk the flour into the pan, then the broth, cream and soy sauce, and simmer into a smooth gravy.
  6. Return the meatballs to the gravy and simmer 8-10 minutes until cooked through and glossy.
  7. Serve with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and pickled cucumber.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Do not overwork the mixture or the meatballs turn tough. The soy sauce is the quiet secret that deepens the gravy's flavor.
