Texas Style Baked Beans - smoky baked beans with bacon in a cast-iron skillet

Texas-style baked beans take the humble side dish to barbecue heights — beans slow-baked with smoky brisket trimmings, brown sugar, and barbecue sauce until thick, sweet, and savory. They’re the side that makes the whole plate taste like a pit.

The barbecue side with brisket swagger

Beans slow-baked with brisket trimmings, brown sugar, and barbecue sauce — smoky, sweet, and savory.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Heat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Sauté the onion in a skillet until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  3. Combine the beans, brisket, onion mixture, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, and chili powder in a baking dish.
  4. Cover and bake 1 hour, then uncover and bake 30 minutes more until thick and caramelized.
  5. Season with salt and pepper and serve hot.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Leftover smoked brisket trimmings are perfect here — chop them finely so they melt into the beans. Bake uncovered so the sauce thickens and caramelizes on top.
