Classic Bruschetta

Bruschetta originated in central Italy as a way for farmers to test the quality of freshly pressed olive oil, drizzled over grilled bread. The tomato-topped version most Americans know became popular in the U.S. throughout the 1980s and 1990s as Italian-American cuisine grew in popularity.

Fresh, garlicky, and bursting with tomato flavor

Toasted baguette slices are rubbed with garlic and topped with a fresh tomato, basil, and olive oil mixture for a simple, vibrant starter.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Brush the baguette slices with olive oil.
  2. Toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes until golden.
  3. Rub each warm slice with the cut side of a garlic clove.
  4. Combine the tomatoes, minced garlic, basil, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar in a bowl.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Spoon the tomato mixture over the toasted bread and serve immediately.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Let the tomato topping sit for 10 minutes before serving so the flavors meld. Top the toasts just before serving to keep the bread from getting soggy.
