Golden skillet cornbread wedge with melting butter and honey

A slightly sweet, buttery cornbread baked in a hot cast-iron skillet until golden and crisp-edged.

Sweet, buttery, crisp-edged

The soul food cornbread is a little sweet and very buttery, with a crackling crust from a screaming-hot skillet.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Put 2 tablespoons of butter in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet and place it in the oven to melt.
  2. Whisk the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Whisk the eggs, buttermilk, milk, and melted butter; stir into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Swirl the hot butter around the skillet, pour in the batter, and bake 22-25 minutes until golden.
  5. Cool 10 minutes and serve warm with butter.

💡 Chef tips & storage

The hot skillet makes the crust sing — don't skip it. A touch of sugar is the soul food signature; dial it back if you prefer savory.
