Southern Sweet Potato Casserole

Southern sweet potato casserole is the holiday side dish that’s practically dessert — mashed sweet potatoes whipped with butter and brown sugar, topped with a crunchy pecan-brown sugar streusel (or marshmallows, depending on the house). It’s mandatory at every Thanksgiving table in the South.

Chef Emily presents Southern Sweet Potato Casserole

The holiday side that’s almost dessert

Whipped sweet potatoes with a buttery pecan-brown sugar topping — the essential Southern holiday side.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Boil the sweet potatoes until tender, about 20 minutes, then mash.
  2. Beat in the melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Spread into a buttered baking dish.
  3. For the topping: mix the flour, brown sugar, and pecans, then cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the topping over the sweet potatoes.
  5. Bake 30-35 minutes until golden and bubbling.

💡 Chef tips & storage

Roast or boil the sweet potatoes until very soft for the smoothest mash. For the classic marshmallow version, swap the pecan topping for a layer of marshmallows broiled until golden.
