Grilled, sweet-savory Spam on a block of rice, wrapped in nori.

Hawaii’s portable icon

Grilled Spam glazed with soy-sugar, pressed onto rice, and wrapped in nori — the snack sold at every corner store in Hawaii.

Step by stepInstructions

  1. Whisk the soy sauce, sugar, and mirin in a small bowl.
  2. Cook the Spam slices in a skillet over medium heat until browned; pour in the glaze and simmer until sticky, coating the Spam.
  3. Wet your hands and press 1/2 cup of rice into a musubi mold (or a small box lined with plastic), sprinkle with furikake, and top with 2 Spam slices.
  4. Press gently to compact, then remove from the mold.
  5. Wrap a nori strip around the middle, dampening the end to seal. Repeat with the rest.

💡 Chef tips & storage

A musubi mold makes perfect blocks — or improvise with a clean Spam can lined with plastic. Eat the same day; the nori softens overnight.
